Rep. Roland Gutierrez Honored with Military Mayors “Legislator of the Year” Award

PRESS RELEASE: Rep. Gutierrez Honored with Military Mayors “Legislator of the Year” Award

SAN ANTONIO– In recognition of his tireless work protecting Texas’ military installations and preserving their mission readiness, State Representative Roland Gutierrez, Chairman of the House Defense & Veterans’ Affairs Committee, was awarded the “Legislator of the Year” Award by San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg on behalf of the Texas Mayors of Military Communities.

“This is a tremendous honor and I am humbled by it. We have a very serious obligation to protect these military missions and the local jobs they support,” Rep. Gutierrez said.

During the twilight hours of the 85th Legislative Session, Rep. Gutierrez played a pivotal role in opposing annexation measures that, as originally written, would have threatened the ability of local military installations to conduct operations effectively, potentially leading to their closure.

“In this role as Chairman, Rep. Gutierrez has been a tireless advocate not only for the military bases themselves but the men and women who serve those bases and their families,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

During last summer’s subsequent special session, Rep. Gutierrez organized a bipartisan, statewide coalition of community and business leaders to ensure that language protecting military installations made it onto any final piece of annexation reform legislation. They were ultimately successful.

“We all count on the men and women serving at these bases to defend our country, and they deserve to be able to count on us. I’m proud to accept this award on behalf of everyone willing to do the right thing and fight for our values,” Gutierrez said. “We met leaders on the ground and worked together in good faith to get the job done. Where others saw a deadlocked issue, we saw a chance to find common-sense solutions and move our state forward with new ideas and a new approach to deliver for the neighbors counting on us.”
